Fall prevention starts with the person and the environment. Clear walking routes, good lighting, sturdy footwear, and properly fitted mobility aids all help make daily movement safer.
At Home
- Remove loose rugs and clutter from walkways.
- Add night lights between the bedroom and bathroom.
- Install grab bars where needed.
- Make sure walkers and canes are the right height.
Talk With the Healthcare Team
Ask about medication effects, vision concerns, and suitable strength and balance activities. Report falls and near falls so the team can look for contributing factors.
Questions to Ask When Touring a Care Home
Ask how residents request help, especially when using the bathroom at night. Find out what happens after a fall and how the service plan changes when mobility declines. Prevention should reflect the resident’s actual abilities and habits.
