Families often use “dementia” and “Alzheimer’s” interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.
The Difference
Dementia describes a group of symptoms that affect thinking, memory, and daily functioning. Alzheimer’s disease is one cause of dementia. Other conditions can also cause dementia symptoms, which is why a medical evaluation matters.
See the Person Beyond the Diagnosis
A diagnosis does not tell the whole story. When you talk with a care provider, describe your loved one’s communication needs, routines, interests, mobility, and the kind of help that works best. This helps the provider understand the person, not just the condition.
Questions for Memory Care Providers
