Names and amenities alone do not tell you what care a provider can deliver. Always ask about actual services, staffing, license or certification, and admission criteria.
Independent Living
Independent living generally offers housing for older adults who can manage their own personal care. Meals, housekeeping, transportation, and activities may be available. Personal care and ongoing nursing are generally not included in the basic arrangement. Confirm which services are provided and which must be arranged separately.
Assisted Living
Assisted living combines housing with personal care assistance, such as help with bathing, dressing, and daily routines. Medication support varies by provider and staff qualifications. A provider assessment helps determine whether the setting can safely meet the person’s needs. Get help finding assisted living.
Residential Care Homes
A residential care home often offers care in a house with a smaller group of residents. The term describes a setting; it does not establish a separate Texas license category. A home may operate as a licensed assisted living facility. Verify its actual license, permitted capacity, care capabilities, and inspection information rather than relying on its business name. Learn about residential care homes.
Memory Care
Memory care provides support for people living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Ask about staff training, daily routines, supervision, responses to distress, and measures to address wandering. In Texas, a certified Alzheimer’s assisted living facility or unit has requirements beyond an ordinary assisted living license. A Type B license alone does not establish Alzheimer’s certification. Explore memory care placement.
Skilled Nursing Facilities
Skilled nursing facilities provide nursing and rehabilitation services for people with medical or recovery needs. Some stays follow a hospitalization; others involve longer-term care. An assisted living home is not a substitute for a setting that can provide required nursing services. Discuss clinical needs and coverage with the medical team and the facility.
Respite Care
Respite is temporary care that gives a family caregiver time away or provides support for a short period. Availability, admission requirements, minimum stays, and costs vary. Confirm that the provider can meet the person’s needs for the entire stay. Find respite care.
Home Health and Hospice
Home health may provide ordered skilled services in a person’s residence. Hospice focuses on comfort and support for eligible people with a terminal illness. These services can sometimes be provided in a care home, but they do not replace the home’s own responsibilities or guarantee that a resident can remain there. Coordinate with the provider and clinical team.
